You do not have to use software to block websites on browsers

Are you searching for a piece of software that allows you to block websites on your browser? Or else searching for a way to block certain websites on your Child’s PC with minimum fuss? If this is the case, then, you really don’t need or make use of any software as such to do that. Without the aid of software, you can easily block websites from within your PC itself. All you have to do is, navigate to the sample Hosts file of Microsoft on your PC and add an entry that associates a website’s host name which you want to be blocked with an IP address.

The following section of the tutorial will walk you through the procedure of how to go about tweaking the Hosts file in order to block websites from within your PC itself.

Locate the Hosts File on your PC

On Windows PC

Navigate as C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc

Inside the etc folder, you should be able to see the Hosts file.

Double click on it. You will be asked to choose a program you want to use to open the file. Choose Notepad to open the file.

Once you have the Hosts file opened, scroll down to the bottom of the file and below the Localhost entry is where you are supposed to enter in IP addresses and websites name that you want to be blocked. For example, if you want Facebook to be blocked, then your Hosts file at the bottom should look as follows.

To add more websites, you have to enter each one of them on a separate line. See the snapshot below for details.

Once you finish entering the website names that you want to be blocked, save the file. To save it, click on the File menu at the top of the window and click on Save. You can also do a Ctrl+S to save the file.

Now, to verify whether the website you added to Hosts file is getting blocked, open your browser and type the name of the website in the address bar. If the website is blocked successfully, you will see the following window displayed on your browser.

If you want to remove a website from being blocked, navigate to your Hosts file and delete the entry for that particular website from the Hosts file.
