Who doesn’t love free calls and Text messages? Now, with the all new and exciting Viber app, you can make free calls and send free SMS’s on your Android and iOS devices. So far, we have come across various VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services such as Skype, Fring, Nimbuzz etc. Viber is the latest to make its entry into the VoIP services database.
Viber application allows you to make free calls and messages over Wi-Fi and 3G networks. That is, you can make free calls and messages from any android or iOS device that supports Wi-Fi or an internet 3G connection. The other basic requirement or we can say a mandatory requirement is that, the caller on the other end should also have the Viber app installed and enabled on his Android or iOS device. The other exciting thing about the app is that, you can call anybody anywhere in the world free of cost. The only charge incurred for you will be the data connection cost (in the form using some MB’s of data) and nothing else.
How to use the Viber app on your Android and iOS device
For the purpose of illustration, we have used the Samsung galaxy S Android Smartphone to describe the How-to procedure.
Download the Viber app from the Android market
After downloading and installing the app from the market, the application will first ask your permission to get access to your Address book. This is in order to verify whether any contacts in your address book are already using the Viber app.
Once you give permission to your address book, you are asked to enter your mobile number in order to get registered with the Viber services.
As soon as you enter your mobile number, you will receive an SMS that contains a unique 4-digit code. You are supposed to enter this code on order to confirm the registration successfully.
Once you are registered and connected to the Viber service, you will see a purple-colored notification in the form of a phone icon on your notification bar. When you open the Viber application, you will see three primary tabs at the top namely Viber, All and Favorites and at the bottom, you will see five menu options namely Recents, Contacts, Keypad, Messages and More. The other good thing about the application is that, all you contacts in the address book will by default become your contacts list on Viber service also.
In order to make a call, tap on the contact to which you want to make a call and then in the next window thus opened, tap on Call Mobile.
Coming to the call quality, it was pretty impressive over Wi-Fi network and on 3G the call quality seemed to be varying at frequent intervals. Messaging service is at its best and it imitates as the messaging capabilities that you would get in an instant messenger service.
Viber app will work on all Android devices that are running on Android 2.0 or later and on all iOS devices that are running on iOS 3.1 or later. For Blackberry users, you are made to wait as the app for your devices is still in the development phase.
Viber app can be downloaded from Apple app stores for iOS devices.
